Localizing your App Store listing

Adapt your store-page text and screenshots for each language, and check what people will see before you publish.

Choose a language to support

Start with a market you can support in the app itself. Review where your users are, which languages they request, and whether you can maintain translated content as features change.

Check your primary language

Your primary language is a setting in App Store Connect. Apple uses the most relevant available localization based on language and region; English is not a universal fallback. See Apple’s localization guidance.

Prepare the text and screenshots together

Translate the app name, subtitle, description, promotional text, and keywords where appropriate. Use phrases people would search for in that language. Keep screenshot captions and the app interface consistent.

Have a fluent speaker review meaning and tone. Preview every slide for clipped captions, awkward line breaks, and missing font characters.

Add the language in App Store Connect

Select your app, open its localizable information, and add the language. New localizations initially inherit the primary language’s screenshots and other properties, except description and keywords. Replace inherited content as needed, then review and save it. Apple’s instructions cover adding and removing languages.

Manage captions in Studio

Studio keeps translated captions in the same project as your design. Export CSV for a translator or JSON for a script, then import the completed file. Pro supports multiple languages and exports a folder for each language and size.

Read the caption import and export instructions before editing the file.

Review each listing before release

Check the store-page preview, screenshot order, and text limits in each language. The keyword field uses a 100-byte limit, which matters for accented and non-Latin text. The App Store character counter shows the byte total for keywords.

After release, use Listing to review search positions and keep a record of the changes you try. Compare results over time before deciding what to change next.

Common questions

Does an untranslated listing always appear in English?
No. Apple chooses a relevant localization using language and region settings. Your primary language is the fallback in other countries or regions; it may be any language you selected.
Does adding a listing language translate my app?
No. Store-page localization and in-app localization are separate. Translate the app interface in your app project, and use matching screenshots for the listing.
What happens when I add a language?
New localizations initially use the primary language’s screenshots and other properties, except description and keywords. Review the copied content and replace it with translated text and screenshots.
Does Studio translate captions automatically?
Studio stores captions in 18 supported languages. You supply the translations, either in the editor or through CSV and JSON caption files. Multiple languages require Pro.
